CABINET committee at KINGMUN

CABINET | Intermediate

Committee Introduction

Hello, delegates! Welcome to KINGMUN 2020 and the Cabinet of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, circa 1979, under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher. The Cabinet is a specialized committee of a nation’s top leaders, convened for the purpose of solving a specific problem. Together, underneath a set of specialized set of Rules of Procedure, the committee will work to de-escalate and resolve conflict on the island of Ireland between Protestant Unionists and Catholic Republican Separatists. Since the early days of the 20th century, Ireland has been in turmoil between these two groups, which has only escalated since the fractioning of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) into the Provisional IRA (PIRA), the Official IRA (OIRA), and the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA). In 1979, the United Kingdom elected its first female prime minister; now lead by Margaret Thatcher, Great Britain and Northern Ireland face the widest set of problems with such a conflict since its inception. In order to prevent conflict from spiraling further, delegates must be cunning, inventive, and wary, and should protect the sanctity of the greatest kingdom to ever rule the world.

Position Papers are now due on May 24th, 2020 at 11:59 PM PST. Further questions or extension requests may be directed to the dais at

Van Monday

Van Monday is currently a senior at Tesla STEM High School in his third year of Model United Nations. When he’s not having an existential crisis, you can find Van on the soccer field, watching a plethora of movies, or with his AirPods in purely vibing. A crisis delegate at heart, Van is extremely excited to be staffing Cabinet at KINGMUN 2020, and is looking forward to delegates developing complex and feasible solutions, telling a compelling story, and not using “NGO’s” to fund their ventures. He hopes that everyone is as amped as he is to be a part of this unique committee.

Aisling McGurl

Aisling McGurl is a senior at The Center School and has been doing Model UN since her sophomore year. She is proud to be staffing KINGMUN 2020 as the Chair of Cabinet, and can’t wait to see how delegates explore the historical context of The Troubles. While not preparing for her next conference you can find Aisling learning Russian, stressing over statistics homework, or rewatching episodes of Avatar the Last Airbender. She is excited to see delegates learn about the historical issues that affect modern politics today, and place themselves in the shoes of influential historical figures.

Charles Ge

Assistant Director

Charles Ge is a junior at Lakeside School and in his second year of Model UN. Outside of MUN and extracurriculars, he can be found shooting hoops for fun, playing board games, or dominating at foosball.
