An Interview with The Leader of The Canton Cohong

During session 2 with JCC, I interviewed the Leader of The Canton Cohong, who oversees trade with Britain. She has been very vocal and unafraid to call Britain out directly.

Could you give a brief summary of any major events that have happened/ your position?

The main thing that happened to my position is that I have been negotiating trade deals with the Minister of Revenue. We also decided to cut off trade with Britain so I am happy that we have other trade options. Britain so rudely denied the treaty we proposed to create peace.

It seems like China is doing pretty well and has the upper hand even if the treaty hasn't been accepted yet. What problems do you think could last even if the crisis is resolved (such as problems with your relationship with Britain)?

The main long term problem is that Britain has disrespected China and the Chinese people won't be able to overlook this.

What was the tipping point for you where you decided Britain could not be trusted anymore?

The tipping point for me was when Britain bypassed the Canton system to illegally sell opium to the Chinese people. By doing that, they disrespected our traditional trade values.

Do you think there may still be a chance that Britain accepts your treaty? What actions will you want to take if they don't?

If Britain were smart they would accept the treaty but they are too stubborn to do so.
