UN-Habitat: China Urges focus on Personalized Solutions

[IPC]: What are the different bloc positions being reflected in your committee?

-

[China]: Currently I am seeing one block position. Currently the U.S. and China are sponsors and we have signatories of Mexico, Egypt, Madagascar and Australia, which is basically the entire committee at this point. But we are seeing one unified resolution, we are trying to work on it right now to try to send it into the dias and make it a resolution.

-

[IPC]: You mentioned earlier constructing eco-cities and using sustainable resources, what sustainable resources hasChina used thus far?

-

[China]: We have tried to implement new rules to access sustainable resources such as increasing the amount of plastic that needs to be in materials sent to china for recycling, its called the National Sword Plan and we are using that to reuse the plastic in different ways. Also, we have something called an E-Waste program which is implemented by Bydo company, and they have this system going on where they recycle electronic waste and implement that into new phones and technology because e-waste is currently one of China's biggest polluters, so we are addressing that in different ways.

-

[IPC]: Seeing as slums are in populated areas, how would you suggest that these eco-cities and eco environments are built, when addressing the United States concerns of people steering towards cities.

-

[China]: That is a difficult question, I would like to propose the idea that we all look at it from the view of our own countries, instead of trying to establish rules for each country we could instead divide up the regulations and establish individualistic requirements for the slum building and eco-city building. However what China would like to highlight with that statement is the use of sustainable resources. Because currently this committee is really focused on creating a sustainable solution so that the developed countries will sign on.
